In response to a perceived lack of ’meaty’ science in the World Around Us at Key Stage 2, Earth Science Ireland commissioned 3 primary school teachers to develop a series of lessons on... Earth Science! After a year of juggling school work with lesson preparation, trialling, proof reading and piloting, 14 lessons are now prepared in 4 separate units on the topics: Violent Earth; Future Earth; Planet Earth and Dynamic Earth.
The lessons are designed to be used at upper KS2, by teachers who perhaps do not feel totally confident in their abilities to deliver a subject that they may have left behind at GCSE level. However, there are enough extension activities for those who like a challenge!
Technology permitting, the materials will be available electronically to all C2k My School users through ‘Equella’, with additional home activities for pupil use via ‘Fronter’.
The workshop will introduce the units of work and some of the activities contained within them, as well as showing how the materials can be accessed. The emphasis of the session will be upon the practical opportunities within the units of work. The morning will be taken by one of the authors of the units, John Sandford.
John Sandford is VP of Andrews Memorial Primary School in Comber, a chemistry graduate and a Fellow of the Primary Science Teaching Trust.
