Ecton Hill Copper Mine Visit and TeachMeet

Location : Ecton Hill near Hartington in the Peak District
This is an opportunity for you to visit a historic mine and to sample some of the activities offered to visiting groups of all ages and interests and will be of particular interest to teachers of Chemistry at KS3, GCSE, Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level. The visit will also be of interest to teachers whose main specialism is Geology or for science teachers who are teaching Earth Science from KS2 to KS4.
Bring the family – they will not be neglected! There will be different activities for the different age groups, some of which are aimed specifically at KS2 children so will be a family fun day out in the Peak District National Park.
The programme will include:
- Introductory talk about the Ecton Hill site,
- Underground trip into the mine, along a horizontal level completed in 1804,
- Walk over Ecton Hill, evidence of mining and the Engine House.
Other possible activities are collecting minerals, chemical testing of minerals for metal ions in the laboratory and mineral separation by density difference e.g. jigging and panning for gold.The programme for the day will be finalised to suit the composition of the visiting group.
You will need to make your own way to Ecton Hill near Hartington in the Peak District on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border and bring a packed lunch. The Centre can offer tea, coffee and squash/cordial.
