The contribution of the ASE to science education in the past half century cannot be over-estimated. During fifty years of profound changes in science, society and schooling, it has responded to many challenges, while continuing to provide its members with advice and support. It has given them opportunities for debate and professional development through its meetings, journals and Annual Conference. It has widened its membership, transformed its governance and management, initiated and responded to a bewildering variety of reforms, and worked with other organisations seeking to advance science education in the UK and internationally. Individual ASE members have played key roles in almost all the major developments that have taken place in school science education since the Association was formed in 1963.
