The ASE Annual Conference University of Birmingham 4-6 January
2007
 |
Birmingham is a place that
means many things to people; I hope you get the chance
to explore the beauty of the original, red-brick campus;
to visit jewels like the Barber Institute, one of the
finest art galleries which you will find right at the
entrance to the University; and to venture into the City
itself to see just what it means to be Europe's biggest
regeneration project. Those of you who are returning to
Birmingham after a few years may be particularly surprised
by the visible and dramatic changes to our cityscape.
The University is also changing. In your professional
life you are undoubtedly accustomed to the dynamic and
competitive world that is higher education today. Gone
is the ivory tower, if ever
it existed. Personally, I believe we should welcome such
changes, particularly in a research led environment.
