W01 Energy Villages

   Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1020-1120
How would you bring electricity to remote communities in hostile terrain? And can we challenge the way we produce and use electricity in the 21st century? By looking at innovative small scale renewable energy sources, workshop participants will devise a practical solution to show how to generate enough energy to satisfy the needs of a small community in Nepal. This workshop draws on case studies from Practical Action Nepal, and will show the real contribution science makes to sustainable development.

W02 Climate Change Adaptation

   Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1140-1300
The world’s poorest people will be hit first and worst by climate change. How can scientific knowledge help to mitigate the impact of changing weather patterns and what does this mean for future technological development? By exploring the impact climate change is having on communities around the world and looking at some life changing new ideas being used by Practical Action, workshop participants will increase their understanding of this important topic from a very different perspective.

W03 Microscience with Datalogging...Keep Practical Science Alive

   Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1140-1300
Microscience continues to prove an effective means for teaching science in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. For the first time we will present Microscience linked with a brand new datalogging system. This innovative resource will save you hours of time, space, effort and money. Come and see how it is done. Take away free kit for use back at school, including information and sample worksheets. It will enable you to do practicals that you thought were too expensive, too much trouble or fraught with health and safety aspects. This concept will give you several extra strings to your bow.

T005 Teacher Networks as a Vehicle for Support and Development in an African Context

   Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1140-1300
Local teacher networks can provide a viable basis for support to, and development opportunities for, teachers in remote rural areas. However, the challenge is to encourage teachers to take ownership of them and promote their sustainability. This presentation describes work with 12 such networks, located in some of the most remote areas in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. These have been successfully working together on a voluntary basis for many years (including one for over 25 years).
