T001 21st Century Science in the International Context
Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1020-1120
Cambridge IGCSE 21st Century Science, developed in partnership with the University of York Science Education Group and the Nuffield Curriculum Centre, is the international version of the successful and popular UK GCSE course. It offers the opportunity to develop scientific thinking in contemporary contexts relevant to everyday life, needed by all, scientist or non-scientist.

How would you bring electricity to remote communities in hostile terrain? And can we challenge the way we produce and use electricity in the 21st century? By looking at innovative small scale renewable energy sources, workshop participants will devise a practical solution to show how to generate enough energy to satisfy the needs of a small community in Nepal. This workshop draws on case studies from Practical Action Nepal, and will show the real contribution science makes to sustainable development.
T002 Introduction to Green Chemistry by Dr. John Warner (repeated Thurs 0930)
Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1020-1120
Dr. John Warner, co-creator of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, will give a dynamic introduction to the concepts of green chemistry, how it is being implemented in industry and schools and how you can integrate these concepts into your classroom setting.
This will enable delegates to explore the approaches used by RISC and, in particular, the activities for assessing the effectiveness of global learning which have been developed for teachers, and using science as part of a cross-curricular project to encourage thinking about peace, conflict and more.
The world’s poorest people will be hit first and worst by climate change. How can scientific knowledge help to mitigate the impact of changing weather patterns and what does this mean for future technological development? By exploring the impact climate change is having on communities around the world and looking at some life changing new ideas being used by Practical Action, workshop participants will increase their understanding of this important topic from a very different perspective.
W03 Microscience with Datalogging...Keep Practical Science Alive
Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1140-1300
Microscience continues to prove an effective means for teaching science in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. For the first time we will present Microscience linked with a brand new datalogging system. This innovative resource will save you hours of time, space, effort and money. Come and see how it is done. Take away free kit for use back at school, including information and sample worksheets. It will enable you to do practicals that you thought were too expensive, too much trouble or fraught with health and safety aspects. This concept will give you several extra strings to your bow.
T005 Teacher Networks as a Vehicle for Support and Development in an African Context
Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1140-1300
Local teacher networks can provide a viable basis for support to, and development opportunities for, teachers in remote rural areas. However, the challenge is to encourage teachers to take ownership of them and promote their sustainability. This presentation describes work with 12 such networks, located in some of the most remote areas in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. These have been successfully working together on a voluntary basis for many years (including one for over 25 years).
T006 Earthlearningidea Presentation: International Earth Science Earthlearningidea (repeated Thurs 0930)
Wed 7th Jan 2009, 1400-1530
Come and celebrate the International Year of Planet Earth with us by discovering Earthlearningidea – an initiative bringing teaching activities about the Earth to classrooms across the world that have few or no resources. Earthlearningidea has been publishing a new activity each week during 2008, and currently more than 50 activities appear on the website, free to download and use. Sample some of the interactive activities yourself and see if they would work in your classroom.
