T065 Engaging Learners in Science and Technology

   Fri 8th Jan 2010, 0930-1030
To learn effectively in science and technology, pupils need to be engaged. However recent reports show that many pupils don’t find science to be a stimulating and creative subject, and that their attitudes become less positive by the time they leave their primary schools. This workshop will suggest a number of creative ways to get pupils engaged in science and technology lessons, maintain their interest and enhance their learning.

W003 Exploratory Talk in Science

   Wed 6th Jan 2010, 1100-1130
Medway LA and the Collaborative Learning Project are working together on resources that encourage pupils to talk their way into understanding science concepts. Evidence suggests that opportunity for exploratory talk and encouragement to collaborate on problem solving, helps pupils to think scientifically rather than just memorise facts. Collaborative classrooms help learners access English while sharing their scientific knowledge. This workshop lets you experience practical activities on hard to teach topics that have been tried and tested in challenging classrooms.

Resources have been developed by:
Collaborative Learning Project Director: Stuart Scott
Medway Science consultant: Heather Millington
Medway Science ASTs: Mark Barley and Alec Stride
Ethnic Minority Achievement Consultant: Alice Adesina

BC17 Puppets: Talking Science, Engaging Science

   Thu 7th Jan 2010, 1400-1600
Using puppets in science lessons engages children. They think more, talk more, learn more and enjoy science more. The PUPPETS Project has transformed both teachers’ and children’s experience of science. It can work for you too.

This course is part of the PUPPETS Project INSET, supported by GlaxoSmithKline. Teachers can obtain puppets, storybooks and animated CDs at highly subsidised cost as part of the course. The session is aimed at primary teachers and enthusiastic secondary teachers.
