W001 Drama in Science Education: a Practical (and fun) Workshop
Wed 6th Jan 2010, 1015-1100
The benefits of incorporating drama in teaching science are many. Drama involves the students emotionally, thereby increasing motivation and engagement and facilitating cognitive learning.
This practical workshop will provide teachers and educators with drama tools suitable for teaching science and socio-scientific issues. Amongst others we will practice role-play, mime and games. Theoretical background will be given for the exercises.
Acting experience not necessary! Will to participate and have fun a must!
W002 International Earth Science: Earthlearningidea
Wed 6th Jan 2010, 1015-1130
Earthlearningidea is an initiative bringing teaching activities about the Earth to classrooms across the world that have few or no resources. Earthlearningidea published a new activity each week during 2008, and one per month in 2009, so that currently more than 60 activities appear on the website, free to download and use. Sample some of the interactive activities yourself and see if they would work in your classroom.
T001 Science Assessment in a Second Language: Perspectives from the SPINE Project in Zanzibar (repeated Fri 1400)
Wed 6th Jan 2010, 1015-1100
This presentation will report on assessment issues that face early secondary pupils in science classrooms in Zanzibar. The work draws from a 3-year ESRC/DfID funded project investigating dynamics of learning science through a second language, namely the role of English in assessments of native Kiswahili speakers. Original and modified questions from chemistry and biology examination papers were given a sample to students from a range of schools. Results on performance will be shared.

Medway LA and the Collaborative Learning Project are working together on resources that encourage pupils to talk their way into understanding science concepts. Evidence suggests that opportunity for exploratory talk and encouragement to collaborate on problem solving, helps pupils to think scientifically rather than just memorise facts. Collaborative classrooms help learners access English while sharing their scientific knowledge. This workshop lets you experience practical activities on hard to teach topics that have been tried and tested in challenging classrooms.
