The Association for Science Education (ASE)
has responded at length to the consultation on the
Primary Curriculum which closed on Friday 24 July.
ASE is concerned to reflect the views of its members
and to maintain the position of science in the primary
curriculum. ASE's CEO, Annette Smith said:
"The process of putting this response
together demonstrated the great strength of a membership
organisation. Members of our Primary Committee, our
President and many others including members of staff
put in huge amounts of time in constructing our response.
We are very grateful to them, and to our colleagues
from other organisations, including the Design and
Technology Association who we consulted during the
drafting period"
ASE welcomes the intention of the Review
to reduce prescription and increase teachers' flexibility
and feels that science, with its focus on enquiry,
objectivity and rationale, provides a unique contribution
to the cognitive development of young people from
their early years onwards, fully justifying a greater
emphasis within the whole curriculum.
