ASE Special Service Award

The Association recognises particular contribution and achievement in a number of ways. Honorary membership of the Association is conferred annually to a handful of people who have made significant and lifelong contributions to both the ASE and to Science Education on a national and international stage. Honorary regional membership is a way of recognising long service at local level and is conferred on a few members usually towards the end of their active involvement, often at retirement.
This Special Service Award is designed to recognise the contributions, mainly voluntary, by the many 'active' members who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the ASE network of committees, events, publications and meetings moving forward.

Nominations.
Nominations must be supported by two ASE members, the supporters, who are familiar with the contributions made by the nominee. One supporter must be an office holder at regional or national level.

All nominations should be made on the Special Service Award nomination forms click here. Supporters will be required to identify the areas of major contribution and include a brief supporting statement.

Criteria
The nominee should have made a significant contribution to the work of the Association. Contributions may take a number of forms for example:

1. Active service on a region or section committee for at least five years. Service which this award recognises would assume regular participation at meetings coupled with an officer position carried out diligently and effectively.

2. Delivery of workshops or presentations at local, regional or national events over a period of at least five years. Such contributions would be expected to be regular and varied and also well-received.

3. Organisational contributions to conferences, meetings and other events. This category recognises the 'behind the scenes'
hard work which is given voluntarily but without which ASE events, particularly at a local level, would not run.

4. Regular and significant contributions to ASE publications or projects. We want to recognise those who write or review for journals and other publications, or make other substantive contributions to projects in other ways.

Process.
Nominations should be made on the Special Service Award nomination form Click here and sent to Suzanne Dickinson at ASE HQ, College Lane, Hatfield, Herts AL10 9AA and clearly marked Special Service Award.
The deadline date for receipt of nominations is 1st November.

All nomination forms will be scrutinised by the Chair of Guidance Division and one other member of Council. Where nominations have clearly met the criteria, the award will be agreed. In cases where further evidence is required or where there is doubt as to the significance of the contribution, the nomination will be considered by Guidance Division. Guidance Division will monitor all procedures for the Special Service Award and make suggestions to refine and develop the process and criteria as needed.

Successful nominees will receive confirmation by post with a letter of recognition signed by the Chief Executive and ASE Chair, a certificate and a lapel badge. The names of persons in receipt of the Special Service Award will normally be listed in the Annual Conference Handbook and acknowledged at the Annual Conference members' reception.

A person may be nominated for a special service award more than once. On the second occasion a certificate only will be presented.
