Dear Colleague
As you will be aware there have been significant changes
in approaches to science education over the last few years
which are aimed at engaging students more fully with science
through both the formal curriculum and the variety of
enhancement activities that are available to teachers
and their students. However one of the challenges we all
face is to find ways of gathering evidence of the impact
of these new opportunities on student learning and interest
in science.
The Association for Science Education exists to support
teachers and others to improve science teaching and learning.
We are therefore very keen to be able to do this based
on knowledge of what works best in schools and how, in
turn, we along with other partner organisations can support
teachers more effectively. The information will also assist
us in our efforts to influence policy and practice in
relation to STEM activities and their accessibility for
all schools.
We are therefore pleased to be asked to support this preliminary
study being undertaken by The Tavistock Institute, on
behalf of the Office for Science and Innovation, to gather
evidence on how you and your colleagues are able to take
advantage of the support that is available.
I realise that you have many pressures on your time but
would very much encourage you to spend a short time completing
the attached questionnaire which will help inform our
thinking and future actions in helping to provide more
effective ways of engaging students with science. All
responses will be treated as confidential.
Yours sincerely
Dr Derek Bell
Chief Executive
