IET challenges pupils to engineer their health

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has challenged pupils in every secondary school in the UK to come up with solutions to some of the world’s greatest engineering and technology problems relating to health issues.

IET Faraday 08: Technology for Life is a year long programme of activities for 11-16 year olds to engage them and spark an interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). An interactive website has been specially created exploring engineering in health around four themes, water, materials, telemedicine and brainwaves and is the central hub of information and activities: www.theiet.org/faraday.

Pupils and teachers can:

  • Play specially designed online computer games
  • Tackle the challenges and submit a video entry, to be voted for on the website for prizes for team and school
  • Watch 15 minute documentary films presented by the Face of Faraday; Dr Jack, a neuroscientist and BBC TV presenter
  • Download lesson plans and classroom activities
  • Request visits by Faraday Engineers who have been recruited by the IET
  • Attend four live FaraDay events during Science and Engineering Week
    • Science Museum, London
    • Glasgow Science Centre
    • Magna science adventure Centre, Sheffield
    • A special facility at the Royal Naval Base, Portsmouth

IET Faraday is one of the UK’s longest running science events for schools which have been revamped for 2008. This new programme of activities has been mapped to the national curriculum at key stages 3 and 4.
