Mr. Zippy's Trainers is an interactive programme
that children with modest reading skills can run, and
enjoy on their own. Successive screens show Mr. Zippy
having problems with his footwear. The children are
taken through a short series of questions that help
them decide what makes a fast and waterproof trainer.
They are then given the chance to design a trainer of
their own, using 'drag and drop' with styles and colours
of their choice.
All instructions are on-screen for the children to
read. The finished trainer can be printed out and includes
their own responses to the earlier on-screen questions.
This is a resource that could be used with secondary
aged students to revisit and reinforce topics that they
may have studied earlier, relating to friction, forces
and materials. It is advised that teachers explore the
resource before they decide if it is appropriate for
their students. The clear presentation and simple language
means that it will be well suited for some students,
but for others the approach will be insufficiently challenging.
A teacher should also check if the same resource has
been used in a primary setting.
Mr. Zippy was produced by Katy Hewis for Lincolnshire
and Rutland EBP and they have continued to develop ideas
relating to this resource.
