Teaching ideas for using Thermocolour film and a visual
fun way for students to investigate diffusion. These
have come from SEP (the Science Enhancement Programme).
|
What is the Science Enhancement Programme?
SEP is part of GTEP (Gatsby Technical Education
Projects). The aim is to raise achievement and
motivation in secondary science students, particularly
throughout practical activities. Its work is a
continuing process of development, innovation,
dissemination and influence. It is engaged in
programmes of teacher training as well as resource
development.

SEP is working with Middlesex University who have developed
numerous innovative resources such as polystyrene mirrors,
slime kits and smart colours (paints and pigments for
students to use that are phosphorescent or change colour
according to temperature). Further ideas and resources
can be found on their website at http://www.sep.org.uk
The Science Enhancement Programme supported the reproduction
and circulation of this CD ROM of resources.

The pdf files included give ideas on the use of Thermocolour
film in a range of experiments. The diffusion in gel
experimental instructions can be used with standard
school apparatus. Both resource ideas provide colourful,
safe, clear experiments that can be performed in a wide
range of environments.
You can obtain sheets of Thermocolour film from Middlesex
University Teaching Resources, Unit 10, The IO Centre,
Lea Road, Waltham Cross, Herts, EN9 1AS http://www.mutr.co.uk/
Middlesex University supports the Technology Enhancement
Programme, which like SEP is part of the Gatsby Technical
Education Projects.
At the time of writing, a sheet 150mm x 150mm cost
just over £2. These can be used as they are for
pupil practical work, or alternatively cut into 4 pieces
(so you could buy a class set for under £10).
