One of the aims of the Inclusive Science and Special Educational Needs (ISSEN) project has been to encourage networking and to provide the opportunity for teachers to communicate with others interested in science and special educational needs.

The ISSEN e-mail group was established as fast and effective way to make enquiries, and to stimulate discussions. There are numerous e-mail groups in existence for special educational needs but this is unique as it is specific to science. It has been effective in that teachers have been able to share with and learn from others in mainstream and special school settings.

Some issues have struck a chord within the e-mail group. One example was a lively discussion considering alternatives to GCSEs and other accredited schemes. Teachers were able to share their own school's approach with the group. Another example allowed teachers to considered the use of symbol-supported text, with individuals sharing their expertise. Science teaching enquiries have been raised; in a recent discussion teachers 'compared notes' on the extraction of DNA.

Others are very welcome to join this e-mail group.
