This is a full investigation with additional activities
uitilising a variety of multi-sensory approaches where
students are experimenting to make the best protective
sea wall.
|
 |

These are activities on the theme of an eroding coastline,
leading pupils to investigate the best possible mixtures to
make concrete blocks for a protective sea wall. Pictures,
drama role plays and model making activities are included
to set the scene with a multi-sensory approach. The materials
are designed for pupils with a range of individual needs,
who are working within levels 1-4 of the National Curriculum
(England).
This comes from The Science Special Needs Supplement,
by Jill Bancroft, from her work at the Chemical Industry Education
Centre. Details are provided below.
The activities develop investigational skills in a context
that relates to rocks and weathering, connecting with topics
on materials and their properties. It could be used in lessons
or as a fun science club project over several weeks.
The strategies used to overcome potential barriers to learning
can be applied to other practical investigations and are explained
in the teacher notes. Detailed level descriptors specific
to this investigation are included, providing helpful guidance
for teachers.

The Chemical Industry Education Centre (CIEC) is part
of The University of York Science Education Group. The
aim of CIEC is to improve mutual understanding between
schools and the chemical industry so that teachers and
industrialists have a clearer insight into each others'
needs.

BASF, a leading transnational chemical group, sponsored
the development of The Science Special Needs Supplement
published by CIEC. Coastline Protection is one of eight
industrially linked activities in this publication for
key stage 3 and 4 pupils, with diverse learning needs
working at National Curriculum levels 1-4.
