What you get

A manageable overview of current policies, guidance and activity that relates to inclusion issues within the teaching of science to students with special educational needs.

Web links are included to the full versions of guidance material. Much of the material relates to developments in the National Curriculum for England and Wales, with reference to recent activity in other parts of the UK. The document has active hyperlinks, which means if you are connected to the Internet, you can click on a web link within the document and connect directly, without having to retype the web address.

The ASE/NASEN Joint Statement for Inclusive Science and Special Educational Needs has been a significant outcome from this collaborative project, encapsulating the important issues and considerations relating to inclusion in science. The Joint Statement is included in this resource.

Using the resource

There are a number of ways that this resource may be supportive:

  • Some science departments are being asked to write Improvement plans for Inclusion and the provision for students with special educational needs. This material will be a useful starting point linking to numerous ideas and suggestions.
  • It could be used to stimulate discussion for departmental INSET.
  • Teachers could use the material as part of their professional development.
  • It could be used as part of the school-based NQT continuing professional development schemes; similarly for ITT and school based tutorials for teacher training sessions with student teachers.
