The schemes of work provide a comprehensive range of
activities that are both age appropriate and sufficient
to meet the needs of the whole ability range for students
(the schools involved included PMLD, SLD, MLD and EBD
specialist environments). The units cover most of the
aspects of Sc1,2,3,4 across KS 1,2,and 3. In this sense,
it is made up of units of work that contribute to the
scheme. The units are separated into those working up
to Level 1 and those up to Level 4. The material has
been produced as Word documents that can be edited,
to allow adaptations for specific classes or groups
of students.

Included in the downloads are overall progression grids
to enable teachers to see the development of the skills,
generic to all areas of science. In the pre-level 1
part of the scheme, scientific enquiry skills are beginning
to develop and these emergent skills are only assessed
from P6 onwards. In these early stages of skill development
teacher support is very necessary. Many activities are
included to address the issue of age appropriateness,
and the fact that pupils may revisit the topic many
times, often with the same teacher.
The use of Widgit Symbols is also being integrated
in the units and schemes. A file can be downloaded with
further information and examples.

Pupils working up to Level 1
These units demonstrate the effective application of
the P levels (pre-level 1). If you do not know about
the P
scales then see the feature in this SEN in the Science
Dept section.
The schemes have been written corresponding to the
8 P levels and Level 1 of the National Curriculum that
would be appropriate for PMLD and SLD pupils.
Pupils working between Levels 1 and 4
These are the units that address the SLD, MLD and EBD
range where pupils are working between levels 1 and
4 across Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.

The STRATA Cambridgeshire SEN Science Project is continuing
to modify and further improve the units and schemes
of work produced. They are included as Word documents
to allow teachers to customise the units. The next stage
is to work on Professional Development Units from the
project. Check the website Astra Zeneca Science Teaching
Trust
