The resource has keyword lists of new vocabulary encountered
each year at the beginning of secondary science. The
wordlists are based on the National Curriculum, including
some vocabulary that would have been covered in primary
science. There are bound to be words you think should
be included which is why the lists are presented in
a variety of formats that can be edited to suit your
own needs. The formats used are:
- A word document (doc)
- A pdf file
- A text file (txt) useful for importing into other
programs such as puzzle builders
- An excel file (xls) useful for sorting and selecting
the words

The word banks can be displayed or given out to students.
New words in a lesson can be marked off on the list,
ensuring the students understand the meanings.

- Ask students to write a science-based story using
as many of the words from the list as possible.
- Try to connect words from the list by drawing lines
between words, an interesting exercise would be for
students to compare their webs and which words they
have connected.
- Group the words by subject (physics, geology, botany
etc.) or topic.
Produce short lists from the wordlist that could be
displayed around the classroom, for example a list
of the words related to investigations might help
remind students what to include in their write ups.
- Construct tables to show words that have everyday
meanings as well as scientific ones.
- There are several puzzle making websites for creating
your own vocabulary quizzes. You may wish to try this
