ASE Technicians Leadership Programme: Day 3 Organising your technical service
An organised, effective and well-run technicians service can really make a difference in terms of the service you provide others. This one-day course which forms part of the ASE technicians leadership programme will explore ways to improve the organisation of your technical service, the prep rooms and other ancillary storage.
Technicians that are responsible for the running of their technical service in schools and colleges need leadership and management knowledge and skills, to make sure their service to students and teachers is effective. The association of science education recognises these needs and has developed a leadership and management programme for science technicians in schools and colleges. Whether you’re a senior technician or team leader technicians, a lone technician or if your aspiring to the senior role this programme can support you in developing your leadership qualities and management skills to deliver an exceptional technical service to your school.
The programme is divided into three essential modules delivered over three days, these are
- Technicians: Leading yourself and your team
- Technicians: Working with and training others
- Technicians: Organising your technical service
The programme has a flexible approach, so you can book on one, two or three days at any point.
Simon Quinnell will be delivering this programme.

I started my career in education in 1998 working as a science technician across all three sciences in a large east London school, then in 2000 took on the role of senior technician responsible 8 labs and a team of two other technicians. Then in 2002 I started work a Tower Hamlets College as a biology technician and then developed this role to teach biology as a lecturer at the college. In 2005 I was appointed senior technician and then national technicians lead at the National Science Learning Centre (later to become STEM Learning). I set up the technicians service and the laboratory areas and over 13 years developed a comprehensive CPD programme for technicians covering all 3 sciences and career stages. As part of this programme I designed and delivered the STACS programme for senior technicians and accredited course awarded by the University of York. My expertise are in all aspects of practical work, technicians development, technical services and leadership and management in education.
