Description

The Gatsby Practical Science report was published in 2017 and made a series of recommendations to improve practical science in schools. The main recommendation was that every school should have a written policy that explains why teachers use practical science, the outcomes they expect from it and how they achieve those outcomes. The process of producing the policy is as important as the policy itself.

The ASE has developed a toolkit to support departments in considering the purposes of practical science and what practical science should look like in their department. This is timely as departments might be looking to review their curriculum intent and implementation following the introduction of the new Ofsted school inspection framework.

This workshop will give you the opportunity to try out the ASE practical policy writing materials before you use them with your own department.

Outcomes

  1. To review the recommendations of the Gatsby Practical Science report
  2. To try out activities from the ASE Gatsby practical science toolkit
  3. To consider how the materials can support departments in reviewing their curriculum
