Full details

This workshop will be run by the STEM author Caroline Alliston (see below), best known for her successful ‘Technology for Fun’ and ‘Physics for Fun’ series of project books and teacher resources.

There will be a FREE copy of her new BUILD IT book for all teacher attendees.

In this inspirational workshop you will design, make and test your own working models, linking to KS2 STEM curriculum learning objectives in electricity, forces, materials and D&T. You will construct a simple series circuit and use it to power a model boat made from polystyrene foam, discovering how properties of materials make them suitable for particular purposes. You will then construct a similar circuit and use it to power a vibrating brush monster made using a dustpan brush and an offset rotating weight. Take away your models and carry out the activity in class helping inspire the engineers and scientists of the future.

This is a joint event with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, so that the engineers/STEM ambassadors will meet teachers and have schools to work with, and teachers will meet engineers/STEM ambassadors who can come into school to help them run the activity. Also the engineers will have access to class packs of materials with which to run the two activities in school, to save the school having to source the materials. Memory sticks including lessons plans, PowerPoints and pupil worksheets will be given to all attendees to help them plan and conduct the activities in class.

Caroline is a Cambridge graduate, professional engineer and award-winning STEM educator. After 25 years working in industry, she decided to use her knowledge and skills to develop fun, exciting design and build projects to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers. When she is not writing, Caroline enjoys running hugely popular workshops for children, teachers and STEM ambassadors. Check out her website www.technologyforfun.co.uk for more details.

As it is a practical workshop there are a limited number of places so book early.

PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE ONLY 6 PLACES FOR TEACHERS-(it does say 12 tickets but there are 2 ticket types, so when 6 tickets are taken I will have to close the sales).
