Course Description

This course comprises a series of modules and aims to support non-specialist, early career and trainee teachers with physics teaching to Key Stage 4. It will be delivered by experienced trainers from Physics Partners working in partnership with the ASE.

Each module is a 3-hour Saturday session, and will focus on one topic. The overarching aim is to improve participants’ confidence in teaching physics. 

The course will cover common physics misconceptions, pedagogical content knowledge and a structured approach to tackling GCSE level examination questions.  Novel teaching approaches will be also introduced as well as relevant online resources, including the ASE's Concept Cartoons, a valuable learning resource used by many teachers in physics lessons, which are available at discounted rates for course delegates.

Each Saturday programme will comprise:

  • 09:30 - 10:30 1st hour of online course
  • 10:30 - 10:45 15 minute break
  • 10:45 to 11:45 2nd hour of online course
  • 11:45 to 12:00 15 minute break
  • 12:00 to 13:00 final hour of online course

Electricity Module

Understanding how circuits work can be tricky, but explaining it to others is even more of a challenge.  In this module we will unravel the mysteries of electrical circuits and equip you with the tools to succeed in teaching this topic.

09.30 – 10.30  To start, we will draw on various models and analogies to deepen understanding of charge (starting with static electricity), current, voltage and resistance.

Break 10.30 – 10.45

10.45 – 11.45  We will demonstrate how to build circuits, including using online simulations, and how to make measurements of relevant electrical quantities to show the relationships between them.  Using the principle of “maths last” we will suggest ways of instilling a conceptual understanding before using formulae to ensure greater retention.

Break 11.45 – 12.00

12.00 – 13.00  Finally, we will tackle circuit problems and go through some exemplar questions.  We will use concept cartoons to embed what we have learned and share tips on ensuring success with class experiments.  There will be an opportunity to share ideas and ask questions.

All participants will receive a CPD certificate on receipt of a feedback form.

Course Presenters

Christina Astin taught physics for 22 years before becoming a teacher trainer with Physics Partners.  She also leads training for the Institute of Physics (of whom she is a Fellow) and STEM Learning. Christina’s approach is open and friendly and she loves to share her enthusiasm about physics!

Ben Ford is a Head of Physics in a South London Secondary School and has had the pleasure of teacher training with Physics Partners for the last five years. Along the way he has given  practical, pedagogy and teaching resources support to AET, Harris and the King College and Brunel University PGCE cohorts. In his teaching at the moment, Ben is focusing on cognitive load during practical work and the best ways to reduce teachers planning time.

Ruby Fu graduated from University of Oxford in Master of Physics. She has taught A Level and GCSE Physics for 8 years in Hong Kong. Ruby delivers her in-depth knowledge in a logical and simplified way, making complicated theories straight-forward.
