Teachers in Residence

Connecting secondary teachers with industry professionals

Do you want to enhance your subject knowledge and engage and inspire your students?

The Teachers in Residence programme has been set up to provide teachers with the opportunity to work with a UK-based design, manufacturing, engineering or construction business, to get an in-depth understanding of modern industry.

This free programme, funded by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and run by the Design and Technology Association, will run from July to December 2019. You will need to either commit three-to-five days holiday or agree three-to-five days release with your school.  In return, you will be offered an industry internship, where you will be fully immersed in the day-to-day activity of a business. This will include work across different departments, attendance at client meetings, and interviews with a range of employees to get an understanding of their career paths.

As a result of this programme you will:

  • gain first-hand experience of modern industry
  • be able to support your students with a better understanding of the technical skills and attributes required by employers
  • have an increased awareness of the career pathways and opportunities available to your students within the sector
  • develop meaningful industry engagement links for your school
