School Environment

The physical environment and verbal and visual communication are integral to the sense of belonging that the school setting can foster. It is important to consider how accessible and welcoming it is for all the school community. This is also fantastic opportunity to challenge stereotypes and celebrate diversity.

Leadership

To effectively remove barriers for underserved students, appropriate changes need to be identified and supported across the school, from Governors, students, and parents and carers. SLT need to enable staff to develop their inclusive practise by ensuring there is time for training with support available as well as committing to improving their own practise.

Future Pathways

A student’s belief in their own ability to achieve something can be enhanced when they are fully informed about their future pathways. Career curriculum links in lessons, guest speakers, and visits to industry can help engage students in subjects, but it is essential to remain vigilant as to how inclusive this information is to ensure no student is excluded.

Teaching and Learning

What happens in the classroom, the learning resources, questioning, student grouping, classroom management, communication, and interactions that take place in every lesson can all impact a student’s sense of self-worth and ability to contribute in the lesson, and beyond.
