In this activity children will use knowledge about pushes and pulls to suggest how the capsule was moved up and down the mine shaft.
Thirty-three miners were trapped underground when part of the San Jose mine in Chile collapsed on 5 August 2010. After more than two months trapped underground, the miners were brought to the surface one at a time in a specially designed capsule. The rescue capsule was painted red, white and blue - the colours on the Chilean flag.
Children will use knowledge about pushes and pulls to suggest how the capsule was moved up and down the mine shaft.
- to recognise that pushes and pulls can make things speed up, slow down or change direction
Children will learn:
- to respond to suggestions about how to find things out and with help make their own suggestions about how to answer questions
