What is this?

This event is part of ASE's 'Nature of Science' series. This series offers a chance to look beyond the curriculum, develop students hinterland and support teachers in starting and leading discussion around science. The Nature of Science series aims to support teachers as they share the power of science with their learners, showing them the human element, complex systems and real world challenges. This event will focus on Climate Change giving you ideas on how to manage, extend and support students discussions around this topic.

What will be covered in the event?

This session will look at questions students may have around this subject, with a focus on developing an understanding of different perspectives from across the world. Cathy will share ways to structure and develop students discussion skills an supporting them in developing respectful ways to engage in debates. This will help you manage topics than can open discussions that can be emotive and challenging, encouraging you to embrace this aspect of science learning and develop wider skills in your students. This will be beneficial for science lessons at all phases, looking at key parts of the curriculum, but may also appeal to teachers supporting students in extra-curricular activities, for example science discussion clubs.

Who is the event for?

This is for teachers of all phases, at all stages of their careeer, who are keen to support students to develop a wider sense of science, beyond the hypothesis and into the real impact and importance of science in our society.

Who is leading the event?

These events will be led by Cathy Priest. Cathy has 20 years experience teaching secondary science and now divides her time between her role as a teacher trainer for Cambridge Assessment and her role as Youth and Schools Programme Training Lead with the Faraday Institute.

Cost

All sessions are free to ASE members and £12.50 for non-ASE members
