ASE, supported by the Gatsby Foundation, are undertaking research to understand the extent and characteristics of international science ITE students and teachers in state-funded secondary schools in England. If you are involved in delivering ITE in England, or are a School Leader / Science Subject Lead involved in hiring of science teachers we want to hear from you!

We have put together a survey, with deadline for completion Monday 23rd June at 0900 hours.

Background to the research

ASE, supported by the Gatsby Foundation, are undertaking research to understand the extent and characteristics of international science ITE students and science teachers in state-funded secondary schools in England. Specifically, it seeks to:

  1. Quantify the number of international trainee and qualified science teachers (with non-settled status) in the system;
  2. Characterise trainees and teachers in terms of demographics, training pathways, and the schools they are working in; and
  3. Identify gaps in support provided, which can inform targeted interventions to improve their recruitment, retention, and professional development.

The aim of this survey is to understand more about the qualified international science teachers entering the system. This survey covers the current academic year 2024-2025, as well as the previous year 2023-2024 and upcoming 2025-2026.

This survey invites your institution to submit numbers of international trainee/science teachers from the last three years of intake, within the EEA, and separately international science trainees/teachers (non-EEA) each for biology, chemistry and physics.

All data collected remains anonymous and confidential. ASE will share key findings from this survey with the Gatsby Foundation, the Department for Education and partner organisations for this project. At the end of the survey, there is an opportunity to be further involved by joining our focus group discussions.

The deadline for submission is Monday 23rd June at 0900 hours.

If you have any questions about the survey please email robbutler@ase.org.uk
