New on the STE Hub: Keynote Insights From the 2025 ASE Teacher Developer Conference
The ASE Teacher Developers Conference 2025, kindly sponsored by the Ogden Trust, brought together science educators from across the UK to share insights, reflect on challenges, and explore opportunities in teacher development. The conference featured keynote presentations, workshops, and attendee reflections, capturing the energy and impact of the day.
A highlight of the event was “Rethinking a Science Curriculum for Social Justice”, presented by Haira Gandolfi, Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge. Haira explored how scientific development is deeply intertwined with social, political, and economic structures, drawing on examples such as nuclear weapons, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and environmental injustices. She emphasised how science teaching often overlooks these socio-scientific perspectives and the importance of embedding social justice considerations into curricula.
"Personally, I came away fresh with ideas to take back to my science team especially around how to refine our science provision for trainee teachers at the Nottingham Institute of Education, NTU. One idea that stuck with me: telling a richer, more nuanced story of Darwin’s scientific legacy. I left the conference feeling nourished from the quality of thinking presented across the day and motivated to keep making a difference with our trainee teachers."
