Technician of the Year Awards Celebrated at our Annual Conference

We announced the winners and highly commended entries to our Technician of the Year Awards back in December. We were delighted to celebrate the Awards with our partners Philip Harris and a room full of technician's at ASE's Annual Conference earlier in January. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our technician community.
We are now able to publish the summary of the judges comments on our winning entries.
Rising star
Winner = Neil Bishopp
Neil’s entry stands out for his remarkable impact, blending technical skill, initiative, and human connection. Despite no science background, he revitalised a struggling department, supported staff and students, and became a trusted mentor across the school. His dedication to CPD and student support highlights his commitment, while heartfelt student feedback underscores his influence. In a short time, Neil has proven himself an invaluable asset, epitomising the Rising Star Award through his transformative contributions and inspiring relationships.

Winner = Joint entry from Jaafar Ali and Soheila Harandi
Jaafar and Soheila’s entry highlights how teamwork can transform a science department. Through rigorous research and innovation, they pioneered microscale chemistry, revitalising their school while sharing expertise with wider technician and teacher networks. Their leadership and adaptability solved key challenges, creating lasting impact beyond their own community. Even amidst departmental reorganisation, their collaboration remained strong, benefiting multiple schools. This inspiring partnership exemplifies dedication, innovation, and the power of teamwork—true Shining Stars making a pioneering difference.
North star
Winner = Katherine Robinson
Katherine’s nomination reflects nearly two decades of transformative impact. A catalyst for change, she modernised systems, improved safety, and introduced lasting procedures within the Science department. Beyond technical expertise, she mentors students and technicians, supports colleagues, and strengthens technician networks across schools. Her proactive leadership, problem-solving, and dedication ensure long-term benefits for her department and the wider community. Embodying the spirit of the North Star Award, Katherine shines as a guiding force for the future of science.
