Secondary Network - Supporting you with Literacy in Science
Join the 11-19 committee to explore common challenges teachers face in the science classroom and how to overcome them.

What is this and who is it for?
The 11-19 committee will draw on their expertise and experience to identify key areas that are persistent challenges for teachers. In this 30 session they will explore why these challenges are there and how you can overcome them.
In this session, we will focus on Teaching Tier 3 vocabulary and command words.
As scientists, we work with a wide range of text types, including descriptions, explanations, comparisons, evaluations, and procedural information. In this session, we will look at how Tier 3 vocabulary and key command words appear across these texts, and how they connect to the interpretation of subject-specific language such as equations and graphs etc. The session will provide practical strategies for supporting students in understanding and applying this terminology with confidence.
This will be uesful for all teachers, especially those new to teaching, or those in leadership roles, supporting early career teachers and trainees.
