Electrifying Circuits
Understanding electricity from static to dynamic.

Teaching Physics: From Basics to Brilliance series are dynamic, interactive workshops designed to provide subject-specific support for teachers of physics. Whether you're looking to deepen your subject knowledge or refine your teaching strategies, our sessions have you covered!
This series is perfect if you would like to deepen your understanding of Electricity, as needed at GCSE and develop effective pedagogical techniques to support you students learning. It’s perfect for anyone new to teaching this topic, anyone teaching out of specialism, or anyone looking to re-fresh their skills and approach.
Facilitator: Dr Christina Astin
Topics Covered:
- From static to current electricity
- Understanding potential difference
- Resistance and the relationship between R, V and I
During the session we’ll be exploring models of electric current, potential difference and resistance that can help us and our students gain a better understanding of what is going on, even though we can’t see the charges moving!
We’ll use online simulations, simple demonstrations and toys that can be useful for the classroom, and explore some GCSE questions along the way (like the one below), addressing common student misconceptions. We’ll look at how a ‘maths-last’ approach can help embed numerical relationships more firmly. You’ll come away feeling more confident about your own understanding of circuits and how to teach this topic.
These sessions will:
- Improve your subject knowledge and strengthen your understanding of core concepts
- Explore effective strategies to address common misconceptions and enhance student learning
- Identify the big ideas and links across the field of physics to create a cohesive learning experience.
Sessions are interactive and have been expertly planned to develop your learning teaching. Sessions will be recorded. You will be sent a link to the recording which will be valid until 31st August 2026.
